Boundless - IndoSoul by Karthick Iyer Live

‘Korappu’ is a compositional format in carnatic music where two musicians exchange questions and answers through their instruments. ‘Boundless’ grew out of this structure, it is a juxtaposition of Raga Shanmugapriya on the violin with heavy metal riffs on the guitar, against the backdrop of tribal rhythms. On its own, Shanmugapriya is a calm raga. But in this unlikely set up, it takes on a dark, powerful, gritty voice that rises above the individual elements. In the end, ‘Boundless’ will leave you on a high - energetic and powerful.

Rejoicing in Raghuvamsa

ABOUT THE SONG:

As a grand finale to this album, IndoSoul, Karthick Iyer Live presents ‘Rejoicing in Raghuvamsa’, ending it where it all started. Composed by Patnam Subramania Iyer, Raghuvamsa Sudha is one of the happiest carnatic songs. This is a classic violin piece in Raga Kadhanakudhukalam, and serves as a conclusion in carnatic concerts. This high energy piece is as much fun to perform for the musicians in the band, as it is for the listeners in the audience.

Clown's Junket by Karthick Iyer Live

ABOUT THE SONG:

The song that started it all! Our first single started with Naveen and myself jamming together on the acoustic guitar and violin almost three years ago. A happy go lucky tune that marks the many milestones that we have and the happiness that we get from reaching them despite the hurdles in the path.

LIVE CONCERT VIDEO

how did the song evolve?

As soon as we played this song in the jam room, we knew we had landed on something extremely powerful, and very different from our usual sound at that. IndoSoul is a journey of discover for us and it was amazing to see how the raga Shanmugapriya transformed magically with powerful guitar riff. Along with the tribal drums and bass grooves, the song gets a distinctive metal feeling!

A Saranga Convergence by Karthick Iyer Live

A Saranga Convergence started out from a quest initially to make a psychedelic song. However what came about was a song that had strong influences of progressive rock and time signature experiments along with a carnatic 'thillana like' melody . This whole song came about within a few hours of jamming with the musicians and remains one of our favourites. Happy to share with you a video of our studio recording at VGP studios a couple of months ago.

Mid Air by Karthick Iyer Live

LIVE CONCERT VIDEO

About The Song:

Mid- Air started off as a random tune in raga Harikambodhi in my head while on a flight from Auckland to Queenstown during my honeymoon. I recorded this tune onto my iphone and sent to the band. When we met a month later in Chennai, the song started to take shape. The song features an interesting interchange between the guitar and violin supported by a powerful groove reminiscent of a 60s or 70s classic rock song with a carnatic twist.

This is the first video in a 9-part video series from our album launch performance at Museum theatre last month. This video features audio elements from both live and recorded versions of Mid - Air.
